#5 Retire Early

First of All, Why?

Why retire early? Most people are content working until the day they die. And why shouldn't they be? Work is healthy! It makes them live longer in some cases. Work gives us a sense of purpose. We want to be producers, contributing to society. We have many reasons for loving work. And never retiring.

ANSWER:

#1  The world of productivity won't end without you.
#2  It won't reduce your lifespan.
#3  It might be very exciting.

What are the reasons for retiring?

Well, first of all, you are still a producer, even if you're ritired. Who says that producing umbrellas for our martinis (little toothpic umbrellas placed on top of alcholic drinks to make them look more fantastic) is the only way to be a contributor to the world?

I can understand if a surgeon wants to continue saving lives way past the age of 80 years old. But most jobs are not really going to affect humanity that much if everybody retired today. And if you're already put in 10 years, or 20 years, how many more people are required to put in that much time, and more, before humanity finally has enough umbrellas in the world?

If everybody worked just 2 hours per day, only 5 days per week, the world will continue turning, cars will be made, wars will still happen, banks will still flourish, crops will get farmed, and most likely NOTHING will change. Show me the studies and research that says otherwise. The reason you never see studies and research saying what will happen if everybody suddenly is a millionaire, is because NOBODY knows. There's no way of knowing. Until we try! I'm not saying try it. Maybe the world would end.

Maybe It Would Start An Apocolpyse

Zombies will be everywhere. The world will all end. Because I told everybody to work only 2 hours and only 5 days per week. But we've yet to see any studies, any research, any documentaries, anything authoritative on TV or in libraries or anywhere that says if you quit today, the world will collapse. I'm not saying quit. I'm saying retire. And I'm not saying retire today. I'm just saying you should retire a little earlier than you had originally planned.

Because, first of all as I've tried to point out, the world won't end. You're not denying the world of productivity if you retire early. And so the first reason is that nothing bad will happen to the world.

The second reason is that your life won't end, unless you stop living life. The reason so many people drop dead the day after retirement is because they don't get out of bed in the mornings. They take advantage of retirement by trying to beat the Guinness World Records champion for sleeping the most hours, days, weeks, and years never leaving their bed!

Life doesn't end at retirement unless you want it to end. If you stop getting out of bed, leaving the house, walking around, doing things, your life might be reduced in span. Yes. But if you get out of bed, leave the house, walk around, do things, your lifespan might in fact increase!

And so the second reason you should retire early is because your life continues, even after retirement. And might even get better! Your lifespan might actually increase! Countless studies have shown that sitting at work reduces your lifespan as much as smoking cigarettes does! Yes, you can get killed by a car crossing the street just as likely as you can get killed by some other accident while at work at your job. And so the death factor might actually be identical or not different at all, regardless you retire.

And so you should certainly NOT be afraid of retirement. On the other hand, you might want to be excited. The third reason in my list of why a person should retire early is because it might be exciting! No, I'm not talking about going on a lifelong vacation. I know a billionaire who tried doing that. He went on a vacation that was supposed to last for 2 years. It didn't even last for 2 weeks! He went crazy from doing nothing! If you love walking on beaches everyday, or roller coaster rides, or whatever people do on vacation, then you might love that lifestyle. But most people don't want to do that everyday.

Live Life

What was your life before retiring? Just do more of it! You watched TV when you came home in the evening? Then why quit watching TV? Keep doing it. You fed the dog? The cats? You watered the flowers? You read the newspaper? You entertained visitors, especially friends and family on holidays? You drove to the ball game? You went grocery shopping each week? You occasionally visited friends and family on holiday? You had a hobby? These things should continue after retirement. But now you can do more of it. And... you can add more things to your schedule.

Money Money Money

If you don't have enough money to retire, then don't. Or... do whatever you can do. Use common sense and wisdom. I'm not saying burn down the house. I'm not saying quit. I'm saying that you should retire when it's possible. But don't delay! In fact you should MAKE it possible ASAP! I've already pointed out in my first and second reasons why you should retire that there's no reason why you shouldn't retire. Retiring isn't irresponsible. If you have the money. If you have the means. Responsible means being a contributor. You did that already if you've already contributed several years of your life to society. Do you think retired tourists are not contributing when they spend tourist dollars? Retired people are contributing.

Contribution

Just by smiling at people on the street, is a MAJOR contribution to society. You have no idea how many architects, engineers, doctors, scientists, teachers, police, soldiers, mothers, fathers, children end their lives because nobody smiled at them. You have no idea how your positive actions, gestures, or just you getting up in the morning and going out into the world, how you treat people when they call you, knock on your door, drive past you, and so on... is affecting our world. Working at a factory making umbrellas is a great way to contribute. But literally everything else you do, even just breathing oxygen, is contributing to the world. Breathing oxygen produces carbon dioxide which feeds the Amazon jungle.

The final reason that you should retire early is because you can do more of those things that I just mentioned, if you're retired. You can smile more. You can go outside and walk down the street and smile at more people. You can't do that if you're trapped in an office. You can't do that if you're trapped in a factory. Of course you're interacting with people at your job. Yes. But you can do so much more if you're retired. So much more.

For example, you can now focus more on managing your investments! One reason that nobody gets rich at a regular job is because a regular job takes all your time, drains your energy, especially your brain's energy. How can you notice other opportunities for growing your money if you're always at the office focused on making umbrellas?

Which brings me to the final scene in this play. HOW you can retire early.

How Can You Retire Early?

Well, first of all you're going to need to be able to explain it to your boss, but most importantly to your friends and family. They're probably going to worry first of all about your finances. Which is why I said DON'T retire if you DON'T have the money. If you have the finances to retire, then simply tell everyone that you want to try and do more with your life. You worry about your health. You can certainly get more exercise walking on a beach than you can get in a factory.

Sunshine is literaly Vitamin D.

And doctors are now saying that Vitamin D fights cancer, I seen one report that said its efficacy was 70% which is massive when you're talking about efficacy of medicines. Just to give you an idea what a typical efficacy rate for medicine is, lets look at chemo therapy... some forms of chemo therapy are very effective, while other forms have a death rate of nearly 98% which means the chances of dying are nearly 100% on certain forms of chemo therapy. Luckily science continues to improve and now there are many various types of chemo therapy.

But like I already said earlier in this article, we need to start thinking before acting, thinking about the future, taking action today to control what our future will be, many people don't ask the doctor what are the rates of death verses cure for that particular medicine or proceedure or type of chemo therapy. Most people think all lawyers are the same! There are good lawyers and bad lawyers. Good doctors and bad doctors. A friend of mine broke his finger, the doctor cut it off and reattached it crooked. True story!
Another of my friends broke his ankle, the doctors for several years told him that it was just sprained. There are many good doctors. Most doctors are good doctors. There are many good lawyers. Most lawyers are bad lawyers (joke).

Think before acting. Do your homework. Do research before picking a doctor, a medicine, a proceedure, a lawyer, a career, a path, a future. You can pick your future!

One way to retire is to acquire the company. Why not be the boss? Or even better yet, why not be the owner? You can be the boss of your boss. Everybody always thinks inside the box. Thinking outside the box is very beneficial in many ways.

Sometimes quiting one job and going to another job is a very effective retirement. Because some jobs basically are retirement. You can't tell me that being a "lifegaurd" is a job. I was a lifeguard. I got paid to suntan and occasionally somebody needed rescued. Certain jobs are retirement. If you already have the money and benefits you need, why not step down to a less rigorous job? And that's one step closer to total retirement. Also, if you change your mind it's easier to get back into the work force if you already have a job rather than trying to come back in from total retirement and having been unemployed.

The most effective way to retire is to simply do it. That's the hardest thing. It's not easy to walk away from something. But sometimes going cold turkey works the best. It's effective.

Other Options

"Many mature companies have policies aimed at inducing turnover at the top levels." They WANT you to retire! "They may offer early retirements, buyouts, and titles with higher compensation but no authority or responsibility – a kind of in-place retirement – to retain younger, aggressive managers who might otherwise leave the company. Your selection of an employer is a critical element in how fast you climb the ranks." (5)

"Unfortunately, there may be times when circumstances dictate a new beginning or company. The trigger might be an unexpected call from a headhunter offering a promotion and a substantial raise, or when those most familiar with your work overlook your capabilities or achievements. You may be in a situation where corporate history dictates promotion policies that aren’t to your benefit. In such cases, your best alternative may be to seek opportunity elsewhere." (6)

If You Want to Quit, How?

"What's the best way to quit a job? When you resign from your job, it's important to do so as gracefully and professionally as possible. If you can, give adequate notice to your employer, write a formal resignation letter, and be prepared to move on prior to submitting your resignation. Skip these steps, and you run the risk of alienating your former colleagues. That could come back to bite you later." (22)

"Quitting a job over the phone isn't always the politest way to quit. It's always better to resign in person, then follow up with a formal resignation letter for your employment file. A well-written resignation letter can help ensure your resignation goes smoothly. Write a resignation letter the right way, and you can quit your job and stay on good terms with the company you are leaving. It’s possible to leave without burning your bridges, even if you hate your job and can’t wait to leave for something better." (22)
